Canis Majoris: People Really Want to Know Who's Making the Non-CD Projekt Witcher

Various ex-CD Projekt Red employees have clarified that they're not working on the third-party Witcher game, codenamed Canis Majoris, after CD Projekt Red announced that another studio is making a new, "full-fledged" entry.

Rebel Wolves - a studio formed by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's game director and various other former CD Projekt Red employees - confirmed on Twitter (below) that it's not the mysterious studio behind the spin-off after it was hounded by fans who expected its own AAA dark fantasy to be the new Witcher game.

"We're flattered by the questions but Rebel Wolves is working on our own epic IP," the studio said. "We wish the new teams in charge of The Witcher good luck and hope to get to play their games soon."

Attention then turned to Marcin Jefimow, an executive producer at CD Projekt Red, who announced on LinkedIn last month that he was leaving the studio for "a new adventure" and is currently "building a new team" to be announced soon.

Jefimow denied his involvement, however. "I can confirm that the team I'm currently working with is not involved in any way in Witcher IP-related projects [or] development," he told IGN.

The studio behind the Witcher game, therefore, remains a mystery but CD Projekt Red president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński said during a recent investors' call that a full announcement is coming "soon, really soon".

The game was revealed on October 4 alongside three other Witcher games, a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, and a brand new IP from CD Projekt Red, with the studio, only saying it'll be another AAA game created in Unreal Engine 5 with the same tools as Polaris, the next mainline Witcher game, which is at least three years away.

Alongside two sequels to Polaris to round out a new trilogy, a Witcher game from CD Projekt Red studio The Molasses Flood was announced. This will be "targeted at a broader audience" (but definitely not a mobile game) and job listings appear to reveal procedurally generated levels and a cartoony art style.

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.
